The voyage from the Island of Molokai to Kapulua Maui was interrupted by a bad storm. With high surf and gusty winds, the dark clouds made it virtually impossible to traverse the waters of Molokai. Still, the Kanaka Maolis (Hawaiian Men) held strong to their faith and began to chant to their Aumakua (Personal God) the Pueo (Owl) to give them safe passage to Kapalua.
Suddenly a bright light appeared in the sky above Molokai their home and the sight of a giant Pueo (Hawaiian Owl) came upon them. Instantly, the rain stopped and only the waters around the Wa’a(canoe) became mysteriously calm. As they got closer to the shore, the ocean became completely calm. Being grateful the Kanaka Maolis began chanting giving thanks to their Aumakua the Pueo.
